Terms of Use

Effective date: October 2, 2026 · Last updated: October 2, 2026

Welcome to the website of the Rochester NY Chesterton Society. These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your use of www.rochesterton.com (the “Site”). By accessing or using the Site you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

1. About the Society and the Site

The Rochester NY Chesterton Society (“the Society”, “we”, “us”) is an informal, volunteer-run association of readers in Rochester, New York, devoted to the life and work of G. K. Chesterton. The Site provides information about our monthly meetings, the annual Fr. Leo Hetzler Conference, our programs, articles and recordings of past conference talks. The Society is not affiliated with, and does not speak for, any other Chesterton society, college, diocese or publisher, except as expressly stated.

2. Acceptable use

You may use the Site for lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes. You agree not to:

  • use the Site in any way that breaks any applicable law or regulation;
  • submit false, misleading, defamatory, obscene, harassing or abusive content through our forms;
  • send unsolicited advertising or spam through our forms or to our email address;
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Site, its server or any connected system, or interfere with its operation (including by introducing malware, overloading it or scraping it at a rate that degrades service);
  • impersonate the Society, its volunteers or any other person.

3. Intellectual property

3.1 Our content

Unless otherwise stated, the articles, text, design and arrangement of the Site are © the Rochester NY Chesterton Society. You may read, print and share individual pages for personal, educational and parish or reading-group use, provided you credit the Society and link back to the original page. Any other reproduction, especially commercial use, requires our written permission.

3.2 Public-domain images and texts

Many illustrations on the Site are reproduced from books first published before 1929 — for example John Fulleylove’s watercolours of Westminster Abbey (1904), W. Graham Robertson’s illustrations for The Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904), and plates from Ernest Savage’s Old English Libraries (1911) — via the digitised editions of Project Gutenberg. These images are in the public domain in the United States. Quotations from G. K. Chesterton and other authors are used for commentary, criticism and education.

3.3 Recordings

Conference recordings remain the property of the Society and the respective speakers. They are made available free of charge for personal viewing and for non-commercial group study. Please do not re-upload, edit or sell them.

3.4 Names and marks

Names of other organisations mentioned on the Site belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify them.

4. Messages you send us

When you contact us you confirm that the information you provide is accurate and that you are entitled to share it. We handle personal information as described in our Privacy Policy. If you send us ideas, suggestions or feedback, you agree that we may use them without obligation to you.

5. Meetings, conferences and donations

  • Event details on the Site (dates, times, venues, speakers, suggested donations) are given in good faith but may change. Please confirm details with us before travelling.
  • Conference admission is by suggested donation and has always been free to students. Donations are voluntary and, unless we state otherwise, non-refundable. Because the Society is an informal association, donations may not be tax-deductible; please consult your own tax adviser.
  • The Society may cancel or reschedule a meeting or conference for reasons beyond its control, including weather or venue availability. Our liability in that case is limited to refunding any registration payment specifically made for the cancelled event.
  • By attending a conference you acknowledge that talks may be audio- and video-recorded and published, and that general audience views may appear in those recordings. Tell a volunteer at registration if you would prefer to avoid the camera.
  • We ask everyone at our events to behave with the courtesy Chesterton showed his opponents. We may ask anyone who disrupts an event or behaves inappropriately to leave.

6. Third-party links and services

The Site contains links to third-party websites and embeds video players from YouTube when you press play. We do not control and are not responsible for the content, policies or practices of third-party sites or services, and a link does not mean we endorse everything on that site.

7. Disclaimer

The Site and its content are provided “as is” and “as available”. Articles reflect the views of their authors and are offered for discussion and education; they are not professional, legal, financial or official ecclesiastical advice. While we try to keep the Site accurate and up to date, we make no warranties, express or implied, about its completeness, accuracy, reliability or availability, and we do not guarantee that the Site will be uninterrupted or free of errors or viruses.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Society and its volunteers shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of data, use or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of the Site. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.

9. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Society and its volunteers from any claim or demand arising from your breach of these Terms or your misuse of the Site.

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute shall be brought in the state or federal courts located in Monroe County, New York, and you consent to their jurisdiction. If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in effect.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may revise these Terms at any time by updating this page. The “Last updated” date shows when they last changed. Continued use of the Site after a change means you accept the revised Terms.

12. Contact
